Senior Applications Support Analyst

In this role I am responsible for supporting two core and several smaller systems. Whilst at Close Brothers I have migrated one of the core systems from AS400 with ASP to SQL Server with Java & JavaScript. As part of this process, I have:

  • Created the overnight maintenance, database indexing and stats rebuilds, backup, transaction log backups, End of Day and post End of Day processes scheduled using BMC Control M. I also handed this over to the overnight batch team signalling any instances that require them to call the on call person.

  • Built the Batch processing of incoming and outgoing payment files across the bank using batch files scheduled using BMC Control M.

  • Put together the communication between the two core systems that picks up changed limits and contact details every 15 minutes via a process of SQL Server Extraction, Visual Basic Script to match CSV formatting and batch to move and trigger a Java import to SYBASE.

  • Built migration SQL scripts that output UPDATE SQL in batches of 50 to adhere to the current migration plan from AS400 to MS SQL.

  • Amended the customer facing website wording and updated the branding for the new product.

  • Migrated the Access database estate to replace the AS400 connections with SQL Server views that replicated the AS400 format and updated VBA code.

  • Organised Penetration tests and completed the changes required to go live.

  • Added Password Hashing to the application and the database.

  • Setup Single Sign on to the desktop application and internal web application.

  • Participated in multiple three-day practice migrations and the successful go livemigration.

  • Post migration change of the End of Day processing from 5 days a week to7 days a week.


In addition to the above migration I have also:

  • Setup a new SQL Server 2016 reconciliation database with an overnight data migration which pulls the last 3 months reconciliation data from SYBASE. This was to avoid daily use of views that were causing issues during business hours.

  • Completed disaster recovery for all systems. Shutting down all applications and servers in one data centre and starting them all in another data centre.

  • Documented and represented changes at Change-advisory board.

  • Organised Pen Tests and completing remediations.

  • Fixedand optimising SQL views for core systems.

  • Planned the virtual servers upgrade from Windows Server 2008 to 2016.

  • Introduced password management and a knowledge base, leading by example on howt o document all processes and highlight gaps in knowledge.

  • Introduced BMC ControlM for our team creating the first jobs setting the standards and promotional rules between environments.

  • Integrated App Dynamics for Servers, Applications and Databases. Configured the alerting and including automatic ticket raising.

  • Optimised database indexing and Stats rebuild. Changing the Stats builds to multiple instances throughout the day and changing the capture rate.

  • Implemented certificate renewals for internal and external tomcat sites

  • Communicated any reported issues or developments to the 3rdparty vendors.

  • Supported the business out of hours as on call support.

  • Completed weekend software upgrades and patching.

  • Continuous knowledge transfers and Training offshore teams.
